In Summary

Zirkzee arrived at Old Trafford in 2024 from Bologna in a £36.5 million deal and initially flourished under manager Rúben Amorim, starting 21 consecutive Premier League matches. However, a hamstring injury in April disrupted his momentum, and since returning to fitness, he has made just four substitute appearances totaling 113 minutes across all competitions.

Joshua Zirkzee is reportedly pushing for a January departure from Manchester United as frustration mounts over his lack of playing time and growing fears of missing out on the Netherlands’ squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Dutch striker’s situation has attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, with Serie A and Premier League sides closely monitoring developments.

United’s aggressive summer recruitment—bringing in Benjamin Šeško for £74 million, along with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo—has pushed Zirkzee further down the attacking hierarchy. Despite Rasmus Højlund’s loan move to Napoli, Amorim has shown limited trust in Zirkzee this season.

The situation has been compounded by Zirkzee’s omission from Ronald Koeman’s October squad for the Netherlands’ World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Finland. Koeman publicly criticized Zirkzee’s recent performances, citing deficiencies in scanning and passing under pressure. With the World Cup drawing closer, the 24-year-old views a mid-season transfer as essential to reignite his international prospects and secure regular minutes.

Interest in Zirkzee is building, with Inter Milan, Juventus, and Como reportedly considering moves in Serie A, while West Ham and Everton have emerged as potential suitors in England. Napoli had previously explored a deal before opting for Højlund instead.

Manchester United, however, face a dilemma. With academy talent Chido Obi returning to the fold and limited depth in the striker position, Amorim may be reluctant to sanction Zirkzee’s exit. Yet the player’s growing discontent and desire for a fresh start could force the club’s hand as the January window approaches.
