Galatasaray forward Dries Mertens has officially retired from professional football at the age of 38, ending a career that saw him become Napoli’s all-time top scorer and one of Belgium’s most decorated players.

Mertens, who joined Galatasaray in 2022 after a historic stint at Napoli, confirmed his retirement after the conclusion of the 2024–25 season.

Though he had been offered an extension by the Turkish champions, the Belgian chose to hang up his boots following weeks of reflection.

The announcement came in a special message ahead of a tribute match for his former Napoli teammate Marek Hamsik.

Mertens revealed that while he has ended his professional career, he will step onto the pitch one final time to honour Hamsik in a farewell match to be held in Bratislava.

"I’ve ended my career, but I will step onto the pitch one more time for you, Marek!" Mertens said in a video message to CalcioNapoli24.

Mertens joined Napoli from PSV Eindhoven in 2013 and made history with 148 goals, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer.

Known for his pace, versatility, and technical skill, he earned admiration across Europe and played a pivotal role in Napoli’s success during the last decade.

After his move to Turkey, Mertens helped Galatasaray win the league title and remained a key figure in the squad until his retirement.

In total, Mertens scored over 300 goals in his career for club and country.

He featured for clubs including PSV Eindhoven, Napoli, and Galatasaray, and represented Belgium in major international tournaments such as the European Championship and the World Cup.
