In Summary

Kisumu County Veterinary Officer Dr. Treza Opiyo announced that the movement of livestock and their products into, out of, or within the county is now strictly prohibited unless authorized in writing by the Director of Veterinary Services or an appointed inspector.

Authorities in Kisumu County have imposed a livestock quarantine following the confirmation of a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak a highly contagious viral infection that affects cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, goats, pigs, sheep, and donkeys.

In a directive issued to the County Commissioner, Kisumu County Veterinary Officer Dr. Treza Opiyo announced that the movement of livestock and their products into, out of, or within the county is now strictly prohibited unless authorized in writing by the Director of Veterinary Services or an appointed inspector.

“All animals must be disinfected prior to any movement from the quarantined area, as per veterinary guidelines,” read part of the notice, which also requires livestock in affected zones to be kept off public roads to reduce the risk of transmission.

The directive further mandates that all animal carcasses resulting from the disease must be buried at least four feet deep or incinerated, with disposal costs borne by the animal owners.

Residents and travelers from the affected areas are expected to comply with all disease-control measures or face legal action under the Animal Diseases Act.

The county has called on livestock owners, traders, and the general public to cooperate with veterinary and administrative officers to contain the spread of the disease.

Violations of the quarantine measures, including unauthorized movement or concealment of livestock, will attract prosecution and penalties under existing animal health laws.
