In Summary

According to a statement from law enforcement, the arrest was carried out by a joint team comprising officers from Kongowea Police Station and National Government Administration Officers.

Police in Mombasa County have arrested a man during a targeted operation in the Makaburini area, where authorities uncovered a suspected drug den.

According to a statement from law enforcement, the arrest was carried out by a joint team comprising officers from Kongowea Police Station and National Government Administration Officers.

During the raid, the suspect was found with various items, including approximately 80 rolls of a substance believed to be cannabis sativa, two kitchen knives, and 10 gas lighters, among other materials.

The successful arrest followed close collaboration between security agencies and members of the public.

In a statement shared on X on Saturday, June 14, 2025, the National Police Service (NPS) noted that the operation was part of a wider national campaign aimed at eradicating drug abuse.

They emphasized the importance of public cooperation, acknowledging the crucial role citizens play by sharing vital intelligence.

Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding communities, the NPS reiterated its resolve to rid the country of illegal drugs, warning that such substances endanger the health, safety, and future of the nation’s youth.

Makaburini and other informal settlements in Mombasa have remained under heightened surveillance as security agencies respond to a surge in drug-related offenses.

Authorities have indicated that such crackdowns will persist nationwide, targeting the disruption of drug supply chains and dismantling networks driving the illicit trade.

Over the years, Mombasa County has become a focal point for narcotics trafficking, drawing increased attention from law enforcement.

Data from the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) shows that the Coast region, particularly Mombasa and Kilifi records some of the highest usage rates of cannabis and heroin in the country.

In response, the government has labeled drug trafficking a national security threat and pledged to intensify efforts against cartels operating along the coastline.

Several operations have already been carried out in informal areas such as Majengo, Old Town, and Makaburini, which police have flagged as critical hubs for the transit and distribution of narcotics.
