The government will not offer compensation to Kenyan refugees in Ethiopia, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi has said.

Speaking before the Senate plenary on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, Mudavadi emphasized that the government’s role is limited to facilitating the return and reintegration of refugees into Kenyan society.

"In matters of compensation, the government only assists with the repatriation and reintegration of Kenyan refugees who have been granted asylum in other countries. There is no provision for financial compensation," Mudavadi said in response to a question from Marsabit Senator Mohamed Chute.

Mudavadi outlined key considerations the Kenya Kwanza government will take as part of the way forward regarding the repatriation of Kenyan refugees in Ethiopia.

He stressed that the process must be voluntary, ensuring that only those willing to return do so.

Additionally, Mudavadi emphasized that returning refugees must be guaranteed safety, protected from discrimination, and provided with basic and essential services to prevent them from experiencing another cycle of displacement.

"We must also engage and coordinate with the UNHCR, the Kenyan government, and the Ethiopian government to ensure a smooth and well-facilitated repatriation process," he added.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Ethiopia hosts 5,672 Kenyan refugees, making up about one percent of the country’s total refugee population.

Mudavadi provided a further breakdown, stating that 2,788 males and 2,883 females are currently residing in Dilo and Magatho.

“As of December 31, 2024, the distribution stands at 2,060 refugees in Dilo and 3,600 in Magatho, comprising 1,250 households and 5,671 individuals," he explained.

"Among them, there are 2,788 males, 2,883 females, and 3,385 children.”
