In Summary

“The more things change, the more they stay the same. The 2027 election will see the same intrigues and outcomes as the 1992 and 1997 races. I was at the heart of both, so I know what I’m talking about,” Kuriaremarked

Moses Kuria, who serves as President William Ruto’s Senior Advisor in the Council of Economic Advisors at State House, has drawn a comparison between the upcoming 2027 presidential election and Kenya’s landmark multi-party polls of 1992 and 1997.

In a post shared on his official X account on the evening of Monday, May 5, 2025, Kuria observed that despite the passage of time, the nature of Kenyan politics remains largely unchanged, still defined by behind-the-scenes deals and fierce battles for influence.

He noted that the 2027 election is shaping up to mirror the political drama and outcomes of the early multi-party era, adding that he was personally involved in the 1992 and 1997 elections.

"The more things seem to evolve, the more they actually stay the same. The 2027 presidential race will unfold with similar twists and results as those in 1992 and 1997. I was deeply involved in both, so I speak from experience," Kuria remarked.

He also committed to exploring the comparisons and their implications for Kenya's political future in his next media appearance.

"I will elaborate more during my upcoming TV interview," he stated.

Kuria’s comments are likely to intensify political debates, especially as the nation approaches the next election cycle.

This isn't the first time that Kuria has commented on the 2027 presidential race. In May 2025, he openly addressed the significant financial obstacles that the country’s next president will face.

Through his official X account, the former Public Service Cabinet Secretary questioned whether presidential candidates fully understand the challenges ahead.

"At times, I wonder if those aspiring to become Kenya's president truly comprehend what lies ahead. When you examine the budget estimates for 2025-2026, the figures are alarming: Ksh1.3 trillion out of the Ksh4.2 trillion budget is allocated for debt repayments and pension obligations," Kuria’s statement read in part.

"This is non-negotiable, and defaulting is not an option. It’s the cost of our reckless expansionism in the past."

Moses Kuria, President William Ruto’s Senior Advisor in the Council of Economic Advisors at State House, has drawn a comparison between the upcoming 2027 presidential election and Kenya's pivotal multi-party elections of 1992 and 1997.

Kuria indicated that, despite the passage of time, Kenya’s political landscape remains largely unchanged, particularly in terms of behind-the-scenes maneuvering and the constant struggle for power.

In a post shared on his official X account on the night of Monday, May 5, 2025, Kuria expressed that the 2027 election will mirror the political dynamics and outcomes seen in both the 1992 and 1997 elections, with Kuria being deeply involved in both events.

"The more things change, the more they stay the same. The 2027 election will see the same intrigues and outcomes as the 1992 and 1997 races. I was at the heart of both, so I know what I’m talking about," Kuria remarked.
