The engagement followed the formation of a presidential task force, gazetted on January 10, 2025, to review the legal framework around GBV and femicide.

Taskforce member James Nombi, speaking to the press on Friday, May 23, highlighted key drivers of the crisis, including property disputes, economic inequality and gender power dynamics.

He urged participants to offer actionable proposals to help curb the disturbing trend in the region.

Dr. Tecla Tum highlighted cultural practices, widow disinheritance, and poverty-driven exploitation like sex for fish trades as key GBV drivers in counties like Homabay and Migori.

She called for stronger, inclusive laws to protect vulnerable women.

The taskforce, collecting views cross all 47 counties, has already visited parts of South Nyanza and Rift Valley.

Findings will guide recommendations to the presidency on how to tackle GBV and Femicide.
