Migori residents decry three-month blackout, demand power restoration

Residents further complained that insecurity in the area has worsened during the blackout.
Residents of Sagegi in Suna East, Migori County, are up in arms over a three-month power outage that they say has disrupted their lives and crippled local businesses.
The residents explained that despite repeatedly reporting the issue to Kenya Power, no action has been taken to restore supply. They accused the utility of ignoring their plight even after a faulty transformer was removed and not replaced.
Local resident Ben Abok said the blackout has had a heavy toll on the community.
He noted that several businesses that rely on electricity have been forced to shut down, while access to clean water has also been affected.
“The community is not able to get clean water from a borehole because the machines are not able to pump water due to the prolonged outage,” Abok said, adding that livelihoods have been badly disrupted.
Residents further complained that insecurity in the area has worsened during the blackout. With streets and homesteads left in darkness, they say criminal activities have become more common.
The community has now appealed to Kenya Power to urgently replace the transformer, warning that the prolonged outage has pushed them into hardship and left them exposed to rising threats.
