Ruto promises to bring Kenyans together, even 'cousins'

Ruto highlighted the importance of unity by drawing a comparison to the church’s collective strength.
President William Ruto has reaffirmed his commitment to uniting all Kenyans, regardless of their background or social ties, emphasizing that it is his responsibility to foster national cohesion.
Speaking at State House after meeting with over 600 leaders of the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA), Ruto highlighted the importance of unity by drawing a comparison to the church’s collective strength.
“The way AIPCA has united and become one, and God blessed them now they are a big Church, is the same way as the President of this country, my desire and plans are to unite Kenya to become one," he said.
Ruto humorously added that he would work to unite everyone, even ‘cousins,’ a playful reference that drew laughter from the crowd.
“It is my responsibility as the leader of this nation to unite everyone, brothers, cousins, neighbours and enemies. All of them. I will unite them to be one nation,” he stated.
The term ‘cousin’ has recently gained popularity in Kenyan social media, after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua coined it during a campaign rally.
Gachagua likened political alliances to a family reunion, asking the crowd, “Makuzo mko hamko? Makuzo mko hamko?” which translates to “Are you all here?”
This moment sparked a viral online trend, with Kenyans using ‘Cuzo’ in memes, captions, and street talk to symbolize unity and camaraderie.
On Monday, Ruto also hosted a meeting with church leaders where he urged Kenyans to reject tribal divisions and focus on shared development goals.
“Let us stay focused on our shared development aspirations, which promise inclusive growth for all,” he said.
The President emphasized that the government will continue working with leaders from all sides to address the nation’s challenges and accelerate socio-economic progress.
His message underscores a desire for a united Kenya, where unity is celebrated from grassroots to government levels.
