Tensions are flaring in Kerio Valley after hundreds of camels allegedly owned by a senior government official were found grazing within the protected Rimoi Game Reserve in Elgeyo Marakwet County, sparking outrage among local residents.

On June 17, 2025, members of the Chebaror, Irong, Keu, and Setek Lands Association convened in Nyawaa, Keiyo North, raising alarm over the growing human-wildlife conflict in the region.

They claim the presence of the camels is worsening the competition for scarce resources, prompting wild animals, including elephants, to invade nearby farms in search of food and water.

Led by Chairman John Lagat and Daniel Chesire, the residents issued a 30-day ultimatum, threatening to drive the animals out themselves if authorities fail to act.

They decried the continued occupation of land by the camels while original landowners, displaced to make way for the reserve, remain uncompensated.

The group further accused political leaders of shielding the powerful individual behind the livestock invasion, alleging collusion with Kenya Wildlife Service officers. “We’ve asked KWS to identify the camel owners, but they told us our leaders already know who they are,” said Lagat.

They also called on the national and county governments to urgently survey and clearly demarcate the reserve’s borders, arguing that it extends beyond the stipulated three-kilometer width along the Kerio River and is encroaching on community land.

The locals demanded the area be fenced to curb increasing destruction of crops by wildlife and enable them to engage in productive economic activities without fear.

“The county must support boundary marking so we can develop our land peacefully,” said Chesire.
