Elachi dismisses allegations of tribal bias during her time as Nairobi Speaker

In an interview on Friday, June 20, 2025, Elachi clarified that all staff promotions during her time in office were handled by the County Public Service Board and strictly based on merit.
Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi has rejected allegations of tribal bias during her tenure as Nairobi County Assembly Speaker, describing them as unfounded and politically motivated.
In an interview on Friday, June 20, 2025, Elachi clarified that all staff promotions during her time in office were handled by the County Public Service Board and strictly based on merit.
“I didn’t hire anyone directly. I inherited a team already in place. The promotions that happened were done through internal interviews conducted by the Public Service Board. Those who qualified were elevated fairly,” she stated.
Her remarks come in response to renewed social media scrutiny, where critics have accused her of favoring members of her Luhya community while at the helm of City Hall.
Elachi’s comments also follow a period of personal hardship. In March, she lost her son, Elvis Murakana, in a tragic road accident.
She has since become a vocal advocate against cyberbullying, calling for greater regulation of online platforms to protect grieving families and public servants.
While the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) did probe City Hall over alleged irregular promotions during her leadership, no charges have been preferred to date.
Elachi resigned as Speaker in 2020, citing persistent political wrangles and threats to her safety.
Remaining resolute, she maintains that all appointments under her watch followed proper legal channels and dismissed the tribalism claims as a distraction from service delivery.
“Our youth are looking for opportunities, not ethnic division. Let’s focus on jobs, healthcare, and development instead of tribal narratives,” she urged.
In a rare emotional moment, Elachi also spoke publicly about the pain of losing her son, sharing how the tragedy has shaped her perspective on leadership, faith, and resilience.
