The National Police Service Commission has appealed for restraint and mutual respect as protests continued across the country, urging both demonstrators and police officers to uphold the law and safeguard lives during the ongoing Gen Z-led demonstrations.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the Commission acknowledged the heightened public anger and frustration being expressed through mass protests, but warned that the situation must not be allowed to spiral into violence and destruction.

“We urge you to conduct demonstrations in a manner that upholds dignity, avoids violence, and respects the lives, property, and freedoms of fellow citizens. Let your voices be heard through constructive and non-destructive means,” the Commission said.

The Commission also asked the public to respect police officers and avoid provoking confrontations. It reminded Kenyans that officers operate under intense pressure and often under emotionally charged and difficult conditions.

“In these challenging moments, we are reminded that our police officers are not just law enforcers, they are our sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters serving our nation with dedication under often difficult and emotionally charged circumstances,” the statement read.

“We urge all Kenyans to see beyond the uniforms and recognize the shared humanity and national duty that binds us together.”

While affirming the right of Kenyans to protest as enshrined in the Constitution, the Commission stressed that this must be done within the law and without harming others. It warned against any form of violence or damage to property.

To the police, the Commission issued a clear call for accountability and professionalism, saying officers must respect the law and act with restraint even in the face of provocation.

“The Commission expects the highest standards of professionalism, restraint, and fidelity to the Constitution. Even in the face of provocation, uphold the rule of law and the dignity of your office.”

Members of the public and business community were also advised to exercise caution, avoid protest hotspots, and keep informed through credible sources. The Commission said the safety of individuals, families, and property should remain a priority.

“The Commission calls for empathy and cooperation between citizens and law enforcement officers. Peaceful engagement and mutual respect are the bedrock of national cohesion and democratic maturity. Let us not allow isolated moments to divide us, but rather find strength in our shared values as Kenyans.”

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a professional, accountable, and citizen-focused police service.
