Irungu Nyakera slams CS Murkomen over 'shoot-to-kill' directive

Nyakera condemned the directive as “reckless” and “dangerous,” warning that it encourages extrajudicial killings and undermines the rule of law.
Former Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) Board Chair Irungu Nyakera has fiercely criticized Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen following controversial remarks instructing police to shoot anyone who approaches a police station.
Nyakera condemned the directive as “reckless” and “dangerous,” warning that it encourages extrajudicial killings and undermines the rule of law.
In a strongly worded statement shared on his official X account on Friday, June 27, 2025, Nyakera urged officers to reject what he termed as unlawful commands.
“CS Murkomen’s call for police to shoot anyone approaching a station is reckless, dangerous, and is an incitement to more extrajudicial killings,” Nyakera posted.
He further cautioned members of the police service against blindly following such instructions, noting the moral and legal consequences they could face.
“To our police officers: Don’t follow illegal orders. The blood you spill will not be forgotten. As you kill other people’s children, remember your own are out there too. Karma is real. The ICC doesn’t forget, and you will stand alone when they come calling.”
Nyakera concluded his post with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr.: “He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.”
His remarks followed CS Murkomen’s statements made during a visit to police stations in Kiambu County on Thursday, where the minister reportedly said, “We’ve told the police, anyone who comes near a police station shoot them.”
The comments have sparked national uproar, drawing rebuke from legal minds, political figures, and human rights defenders, who argue such rhetoric could embolden police violence.
Lawyer Willis Otieno echoed Nyakera’s concerns, reminding officers that legal responsibility cannot be deflected.
“Dear Police Officers, if you choose to follow illegal orders from @kipmurkomen or any politician drunk on power, know this you will stand alone in the dock,” Otieno warned. “No uniform will protect you. No politician will shield you when the law comes for you.”
The backlash underscores growing unease over increasing cases of police excesses, especially in the wake of rising tensions between state forces and the public.
