CS Murkomen warns rogue officers abetting illicit alcohol trade

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a stern warning to government officials aiding the sale and distribution of second-generation alcohol, saying the government will soon take action against those involved.
Speaking in Kapsabet Town during the launch of the 19th Jukwaa la Usalama grassroots engagement in Nandi County, Murkomen said some officers have formed corrupt alliances with unscrupulous traders, fueling the spread of illicit brews and drugs in the North Rift region.
He noted that alcohol peddlers are deliberately targeting young people in colleges and villages, particularly in Nandi County.
"We will repurpose our Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, and police officers to fully understand the consequences of turning a blind eye to this menace,” the CS said.
Murkomen also announced plans to operationalize six new administrative divisions in Nandi County, addressing historical neglect by past administrations in the region’s governance structure.
He was accompanied by Nandi Governor Stephen Sang and legislators Julius Melly (Tinderet), Josses Lelmengit (Emgwen), Marianne Kitany (Aldai), and Zipporah Kering (EALA), among other local leaders.
The crackdown follows a March 6 directive by the government suspending all licences for second-generation alcohol manufacturers, requiring them to reapply under tighter scrutiny. The suspension, issued under the Preservation of Public Security Act, also affected permits issued by KRA and KEBS.
