Isiolo police probe shooting, chaos at county assembly

Isiolo Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Mwendwa confirmed ongoing investigations, noting that officers are working to identify those involved in storming the premises, damaging property, and looting.
Police in Isiolo have launched a probe into a shooting and widespread vandalism that broke out at the Isiolo County Assembly following Thursday's impeachment motion against Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo.
The unrest saw 26-year-old Barack Abdullahi sustain a gunshot wound to the ankle.
He is currently undergoing treatment at Almasi Medical Centre.
Isiolo Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Mwendwa confirmed ongoing investigations, noting that officers are working to identify those involved in storming the premises, damaging property, and looting.
According to Mwendwa, two vehicles were vandalized, windows shattered, and furniture and other items stolen during the chaos.
On the matter of the shooting, Mwendwa urged restraint, pointing out that the official report filed by a family member referred to the shooter as an “unknown person.”
He added that police are yet to record a direct statement from the injured man, which is crucial for the inquiry to proceed.
Despite the police caution, Abdullahi’s family maintains that the County Assembly Speaker is responsible for the shooting. Abdullahi recounted that he was standing outside the assembly when he saw the Speaker inside a county-flagged vehicle.
He claims the Speaker pointed a gun at him and fired. He attempted to run, he said, but collapsed and later regained consciousness at the hospital.
His sister, Asley Salad Mohamed, has appealed for expedited investigations to bring the truth to light and ensure justice is served.
Dr. Abdikadir Mohamud, a surgeon at Almasi Medical Centre, confirmed that a bullet was removed from Abdullahi’s ankle during surgery.
He indicated the injury was consistent with a shot from a small-caliber weapon fired at close range, based on initial findings.
