DCI nabs dozens in fertilizer theft, vandalism, and looting cases following protests

In a statement released on X, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the recovery of 63 bags of government-subsidized fertilizer looted during the protests.
An intelligence-driven crackdown in Luluma Village, Makiri area, and Maua Township in Igembe South Sub-County has led to the arrest of several suspects and recovery of government property stolen during the June 25, 2025, demonstrations.
In a statement released on X, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the recovery of 63 bags of government-subsidized fertilizer looted during the protests.
Also seized were a silver Toyota Probox, registration number KCW 822T, and three motorcycles KMFS 106Q, KMFY 687H, and KMFM 529E, suspected to have been used to ferry the stolen supplies.
In a separate swoop in Malindi, Kilifi County, fourteen individuals were arrested after forensic investigations linked them to acts of vandalism targeting public and private property during the unrest. All suspects are in custody pending arraignment.
The DCI says investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend more suspects and recover additional looted items.
Meanwhile, in Embu County, six people were arrested on June 28 in connection with theft and destruction of property that occurred during the same protests.
Among those arrested were a 22-year-old, a 19-year-old, and a 45-year-old man allegedly caught with a stolen washing machine. Another suspect, aged 28, was found in possession of various retail items believed to have been looted from a local shop.
A 29-year-old suspect was reportedly caught with several bottles of whisky and a bundle of steel wire, while a 26-year-old was apprehended at Downtown Guest House with an assortment of stolen electronics and personal items including two desktop computers, a television set, wristwatches, three pairs of boots, jackets, new jeans, and extension cables.
All suspects are set to appear before the Embu Law Courts today.
The government, through security agencies, has reiterated its commitment to restoring law and order, even as it affirms its respect for citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful protest.
