Kalonzo open to talks with Ruto, but only on his terms

Kalonzo said he would only consider dialogue with the President if the situation in the country became dire.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has signaled a potential willingness to engage with President William Ruto albeit under strict conditions amid rising political tension in the country.
Speaking in a televised interview with Kameme on June 30, 2025, Kalonzo said he would only consider dialogue with the President if the situation in the country became dire, warning that any negotiations must happen on neutral ground and not on terms dictated by the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“If it comes to that, we will need independent mediators. Ruto cannot be the one to initiate or chair such talks. We should look to neutral entities like the African Union to intervene if the political environment continues to deteriorate,” Kalonzo stated.
He made it clear that former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo would not be acceptable as a mediator, citing concerns over impartiality. Kalonzo pointed to past experiences, including the NADCO talks between Raila Odinga and President Ruto, from which he was sidelined.
“If signs of instability emerge, let us identify respected figures to mediate but not Obasanjo. He’s already compromised after presiding over previous closed-door talks in Mombasa between Raila and Ruto. We need genuine neutrality. Religious institutions like the Catholic Church are better placed to guide such a process,” he added.
Kalonzo also dismissed speculation that he could be swayed by ODM leader Raila Odinga to align with President Ruto, firmly insisting his political decisions would be shaped by public interest rather than political persuasion.
“People need to understand one thing clearly: Kalonzo cannot be talked into joining Ruto’s side by Raila or anyone else. I stand where the people are. That’s my principle, and that’s how I’ll move forward,” he said.
Kalonzo’s remarks come in the wake of renewed efforts by senior Kenya Kwanza figures to woo him ahead of the 2027 general election. Despite these overtures, he has consistently declined, citing moral and ideological differences with Ruto’s administration.
During a recent tour of the Ukambani region, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki publicly extended an invitation to Kalonzo to consider joining the government, commending his leadership qualities and hinting at the possibility of a significant government role.
Kindiki framed the offer as part of a broader unity and development agenda, while subtly rebuking his predecessor, Rigathi Gagua, for fanning political division.
Similarly, influential figures like Farouk Kibet have also courted Kalonzo, suggesting he could be in line for a high-profile role if he agrees to work with the Kenya Kwanza team.
