Kalonzo said the controversial mission appeared to sidestep both parliamentary and judicial oversight.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has sharply criticized the government’s ongoing deployment of Kenyan police officers to Haiti, describing it as a questionable arrangement between President William Ruto and the former U.S. administration under Joe Biden.

Speaking to BBC on Friday, July 25, 2025, Kalonzo said the controversial mission appeared to sidestep both parliamentary and judicial oversight.

"In a nutshell, we are against that deployment. It looks like a private deal between the Ruto and Biden administrations, even though such a move should have been deliberated by the United Nations Security Council," he said.

Kalonzo expressed deep concern over the safety and wellbeing of Kenyan officers stationed in the Caribbean nation, revealing that several had already lost their lives in the line of duty.

“We have lost several of our young people in Haiti, and we want them back,” he stated.

The opposition chief reiterated Azimio’s long-standing objection to the deployment, referencing a prior court ruling that barred the government from dispatching police officers to Haiti.

“As the opposition, we made it clear that we want our boys home. That deployment went against a court ruling,” Kalonzo added.

His remarks come nearly a month after Kenyan officers joined Haitian and U.N. officials in Port-au-Prince to mark the first anniversary of the deployment under the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS).

The MSS, a U.N.-sanctioned initiative, aims to support Haiti’s beleaguered police in combating the country’s spiraling gang violence. It includes 800 Kenyan police officers serving as the lead contingent.

Speaking at the June 27 commemoration, María Isabel Salvador, the U.N. Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Haiti, underscored the critical role of the mission in stabilizing the country’s fragile security landscape.

“The MSS is vital in providing operational support to the Haitian National Police, particularly through joint operations to counter gangs and improve security,” she said.

Mission Force Commander Godfrey Otunge opened his address with a moment of silence for fallen officers, acknowledging the heavy toll and complexity of the assignment.

“The path to lasting peace is never easy. It is complex and challenging,” Otunge remarked.
