The National Heroes Council has invited members of the public to submit nominations for individuals to be considered for recognition as national heroes ahead of this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations.

In a public notice published on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, via the MyGov platform, the Council announced that individuals, organizations, institutions, and community groups are eligible to put forward names of exemplary Kenyans whose actions have significantly contributed to the nation.

“Pursuant to Section 22 of the Kenya Heroes Act, the Council calls upon the public to submit proposals for the nomination of deserving individuals for consideration as national heroes,” the notice stated.

Submissions must be made within 21 days from the date of the announcement, with the deadline set for July 21, 2025.

Successful candidates are expected to be honored during the Mashujaa Day celebrations scheduled for October 20.

To be eligible for nomination, individuals must have made extraordinary sacrifices or contributions in any of the 14 functional areas identified in the First Schedule of the Act.

These include the struggle for liberation, spiritual leadership, indigenous knowledge, cultural practices, arts, sports, academic excellence, professional achievements, peacebuilding, leadership, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, environmental conservation, and promotion of national cohesion and integration.

Nominees are also expected to reflect the values enshrined in Article 10 of the Constitution, including patriotism, integrity, innovation, discipline, and resilience.

Nomination forms can be accessed through the Council’s official website www.heroes.go.ke. Completed forms can be submitted via email to [email protected], delivered in person to the Council’s offices, or sent through postal mail.

Established under the Kenya Heroes Act No. 5 of 2014, the National Heroes Council is tasked with identifying, selecting, and recommending individuals for national recognition.

During the 2024 Mashujaa Day celebrations, President William Ruto honored 142 individuals across various sectors including sports, philanthropy, public service, and cultural preservation.

Recognized heroes may receive national honors such as medals, public commendations, and memorials in their name.
