In Summary

The station was torched on Thursday, July 5, during Ojwang’s funeral reception, as mourners and local residents accused police of playing a role in his death.

Police officers who were stationed at Mawego Police Station in Homa Bay County have been withdrawn and redeployed following the burning of the station by angry residents during the burial of Albert Ojwang, whose controversial death in custody has sparked public outrage.

The National Police Service confirmed the transfer of the officers to Kendu Bay Police Station, days after the Mawego facility was set ablaze on Thursday, July 5.

The incident took place during Ojwang’s funeral, where mourners accused the police of being involved in his death.

Ojwang was reportedly arrested at his home, briefly held at Mawego Police Station, and later transferred to Nairobi Central Police Station, where he died under unclear circumstances.

His death has raised serious concerns, with allegations of torture while in police custody triggering widespread anger and tension among residents.

As investigations into the fire and Ojwang’s death continue, a senior police officer who spoke to Citizen TV on condition of anonymity said a review is ongoing to determine whether the area still requires a police post.

“If the residents express the need for a new police post, reconstruction might be considered but any rebuilding efforts may require community contributions,” the officer stated.

The police service has not issued an official statement, but it has assured the public that all officers involved in Ojwang’s arrest and detention will be questioned as part of the ongoing probe.

Preliminary findings from the investigation will guide the decision on whether Mawego Police Station will be rebuilt or shut down permanently.

During the burial, several leaders defended the local community, insisting that Mawego residents were not behind the arson.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga dismissed reports blaming residents for torching the station, saying such claims were misleading.

The National Police Service has pledged to ensure accountability, promising that officers found to have played a role in Ojwang’s death will face the necessary action.
