Ethekon and team officially sworn in as new IEBC leadership takes office

Their swearing-in comes just a day after a bench of three High Court judges cleared their appointments, dismissing a petition that had challenged the legality of their nomination process.
Erastus Edung was officially sworn in as Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Friday, taking oath alongside six commissioners who will serve for the next six years.
The ceremony, held at the Supreme Court Buildings, marked a key moment as the new leadership team prepares to guide the electoral body through critical tasks ahead.
Joining Edung are commissioners Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah. Chief Justice Martha Koome presided over the event, formally enabling the team to assume their duties at the commission.
This swearing-in followed President William Ruto’s official gazettement of the appointments on July 10, 2025, a step taken to regularise the process after a recent High Court decision raised questions over the initial notices.
Gazette Notice No. 9269 confirmed Edung’s appointment as Chairperson, while Gazette Notice No. 9270 named the six commissioners for the same term.
On Thursday, the High Court had quashed earlier Gazette Notices No. 7724 and 7725, dated June 10, 2025, after ruling they breached interim conservatory orders issued on May 29, 2025.
However, the judges, Roselyne Aburili, John Chigiti, and Bahati Mwamuye—allowed the appointments to stand, noting that the problem lay with the formalisation process and not with the qualifications or merit of the appointed individuals.
Following the court’s directive, the fresh gazettement paved the way for the IEBC leadership to officially take office, clearing any legal doubts and enabling them to begin their roles without further delay.
