WHO honours former President Kenyatta for championing global pandemic agreement

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta for his significant contribution in advancing global efforts to establish a pandemic preparedness framework.
Kenyatta was acknowledged for his advocacy and leadership in promoting the WHO Pandemic Agreement, recently endorsed by the 78th World Health Assembly.
The certificate of recognition reads: “His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, former President of Kenya, The World Together, in recognition of your role in championing and advocating for the WHO Pandemic Agreement adopted by the seventy-eighth World Health Assembly.”
Uhuru led Kenya through the COVID-19 crisis and was instrumental in implementing both local and international measures to mitigate the pandemic’s impact.
The WHO member states officially adopted the pandemic agreement in May 2025, marking a unified global strategy to strengthen readiness and response mechanisms for future public health emergencies.
The pact introduces a coordinated framework that emphasizes equal access to vaccines, diagnostics, and treatment, while also aiming to address systemic failures witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
It further outlines approaches to improve funding, streamline response protocols, and close existing gaps in global health infrastructure.
This milestone agreement follows three years of multilateral negotiations and reflects a shared global resolve to improve resilience and collaboration in managing pandemics.
