Halake confirmed that she is now the official party leader of the Alliance for Real Change (ARC), a party previously associated with her husband.

Amina Halake, wife of former presidential contender Mohammed Abduba Dida, has announced her candidacy for Kenya’s Presidential seat in the 2027 General Election, making a bold entry into the country's male-dominated political arena.

Speaking during a televised interview with TV47, Halake confirmed that she is now the official party leader of the Alliance for Real Change (ARC), a party previously associated with her husband. She asserted her authority and independence, declaring, “I am the party leader for Alliance for Real Change, not my husband Abduba Dida.”

Halake’s declaration signals a significant shift in the political landscape, positioning her among the few women in Kenya’s history who have sought the presidency. Her entry echoes the ambitions of trailblazers like Charity Ngilu, Nazlin Omar, and Martha Karua, whose past bids paved the way for female political participation at the highest level.

“This is the time for a woman president,” Halake said. “Kenyans are fed up, tired, and fully aware of what is going on. Everything is collapsing—even a two-year-old now speaks like a politician.”

Reflecting on her past involvement in Dida’s campaigns, Halake noted she had always been deeply engaged behind the scenes, from strategizing to managing his affairs at home. “I was involved in almost everything. So, there is nothing I do not know about campaigns and strategy,” she added.

While she now holds the reins of ARC, it remains unclear whether Dida will support her candidacy. The former presidential candidate is currently out of the country and recently released on parole from a U.S. correctional facility.

Dida had been serving a seven-year sentence stemming from convictions related to aggravated stalking and threats. He was released on April 3, 2025, after serving nearly two and a half years at Big Muddy Correctional Centre in Illinois.

Halake revealed that although she had hinted at her presidential ambitions to Dida, they had not held any serious discussions about it. “He may or may not support me. When he returns, maybe he will,” she said.

Her motivation, she insists, stems from more than personal ambition it is driven by what she describes as a deep national crisis. Citing rampant corruption, increasing cases of unresolved abductions, and extrajudicial killings, Halake said her candidacy is a response to the failures of the current political leadership.

“No one is being held accountable,” she lamented. “This candidacy is not just about ambition it’s about offering a real solution to a nation in distress.”

With her announcement, Halake becomes one of the first women to formally join the 2027 presidential race, setting the stage for what could be one of Kenya’s most unpredictable elections in recent years.
