In Summary

Odhiambo, who was sworn in as the panel’s vice-chair last week, has faced backlash from certain media outlets and commentators who accused her of compromising her independence.

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has defended Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo, following a wave of media criticism over her recent appointment to the Presidential Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Protests and Riots.

Odhiambo, who was sworn in as the panel’s vice-chair last week, has faced backlash from certain media outlets and commentators who accused her of compromising her independence by accepting a government role.

In its statement, the Council described the attacks as “uncalled for and in bad faith,” arguing that Odhiambo’s participation in the panel represents a commitment to justice, not a betrayal of public trust.

“To demand that Ms. Odhiambo reject her appointment is an illogical demand tantamount to calling for all LSK members in public service to resign,” the Council stated, warning that such rhetoric undermines the very principles of collaborative governance.

"By insisting the LSK President reject the appointment, these outlets are limiting the LSK to pure criticism, ignoring its vital potential to improve governance from within."

MCK said that the media must remain a watchdog, not a weapon.

While acknowledging the media’s right to critique government actions, the Council cautioned against “mob justice” and premature condemnation.

“Condemning Ms. Odhiambo for an anticipated failure before she has even begun her work is not only cynical and counterproductive, it borders on sadism,” the statement read.

Odhiambo herself addressed the controversy during the panel’s swearing-in ceremony, assuring Kenyans that her decision was rooted in a desire to uphold the rule of law and ensure victims of state violence receive justice.

“As I take up this responsibility, let it be known that I have in no way betrayed your trust. Let it be clear that access to criminal justice remains critical to me in our quest to promote and protect the rule of law as an essential element in the enjoyment of the fundamental human rights and freedoms.” She affirmed.
