The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has deployed drone surveillance in Karura Forest as part of enhanced security operations, coming days after reports of a python being spotted within the popular Nairobi green space.
In a statement, the service said the drones will complement existing measures, providing constant aerial monitoring of the forest to assure visitors of safety as they walk, jog, cycle, and picnic.
"The drone unit from the Security and Protection Directorate now conducts regular aerial patrols throughout the forest," the statement read.
"This new security system provides better monitoring of the forest area, giving visitors confidence as they walk, cycle, and picnic. The drone patrols work alongside existing ground security measures, showing KFS's commitment to keeping Karura Forest safe and accessible for all Nairobi residents and visitors."
The update follows recent security concerns and debates surrounding the management of Karura Forest after the KFS assumed control from the Community Forest Association.
On September 5, the agency confirmed receiving reports of a python roaming the forest trails. It issued a public advisory urging caution and asking visitors to immediately alert rangers at the forest gates in case of any sightings.
KFS also encouraged those with pets to keep them leashed strictly along designated tracks.
"In case of any sighting, the matter should be reported immediately to KFS Forest Rangers located at the various gates," KFS stated.
"In addition, visitors with pets are advised to consider keeping them on a leash along the designated tracks only," it added.
The service further advised Kenyans to stick to marked tracks for walking or jogging as a precaution.
It also noted that while the circulating photo of the python had not been authenticated, similar incidents were recorded in 2019 and 2022.
KFS assured the public that it will continue collaborating with relevant government agencies to address wildlife-related incidents while keeping Karura open and safe for visitors.
