According to Kimutai, the regular movement of large trucks through the town center creates a significant and ongoing threat to public safety.

An Eldoret resident has formally requested that the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) take immediate action to restrict long-distance trailers from traveling through Eldoret town.

Instead, he proposes that these heavy trucks be diverted to use the Eldoret Southern Bypass.

In a letter addressed to KENHA, Albert Kimutai expressed concern over the rising congestion within Eldoret’s central business district and nearby residential areas, citing both a growing human population and an increase in traffic.

According to Kimutai, the regular movement of large trucks through the town center creates a significant and ongoing threat to public safety.

He referenced a recent tragic accident in which a motorcycle collided with a long-distance truck, leading to the death of a passenger.

Kimutai described the incident as deeply distressing, adding that it is part of a worrying trend of similar accidents involving heavy vehicles on roads that were not built to accommodate them.

Beyond the tragic loss of life, he says, the continued presence of heavy trucks within Eldoret town has contributed to worsening traffic congestion, particularly along Uganda Road and other major thoroughfares.

He also highlighted the resulting strain on road infrastructure, which is leading to accelerated wear and tear, increased air and noise pollution in residential neighborhoods and near schools, and elevated risks for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users.

Kimutai also pointed out that the Eldoret Southern Bypass—built specifically to reduce such risks and enhance traffic management—remains largely underused by heavy commercial vehicles.
