In Summary

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, regions likely to experience significant rainfall include the Central Highlands, with Nairobi singled out  as well as the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Western, and North-western Kenya.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory warning that ongoing rains across several parts of the country are expected to intensify between Friday, October 3, and Sunday, October 5,2025.

The department says rainfall amounts will increase in both intensity and spread, raising the risk of flooding and travel disruptions in some areas.

According to the advisory, the regions likely to experience significant rainfall include the Central Highlands, with Nairobi singled out  as well as the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Western, and North-western Kenya.

Forecasts indicate that some counties within these areas could receive between 20mm and 50mm of rainfall in 24 hours, while localized areas may experience downpours exceeding 50mm within the same period.

"These intense rains may lead to localized flooding, slippery roads, and possible disruptions, so stay alert and plan your activities carefully, "the statement read in part.

The advisory comes at a time when farmers in several parts of the country are already reporting waterlogged fields, while urban centers such as Nairobi and Kisumu have witnessed traffic disruptions caused by persistent showers this week.

Motorists, pedestrians, and those living in flood-prone zones have been advised to exercise extra caution, especially in low-lying areas and informal settlements where drainage remains a challenge.

Floods have been a challenge in the past during heavy rains, causing destruction and displacement of residents in the lower river basins of the Tana, Nyando, and Nzoia, the Lake Victoria basin (including the Winam Gulf and Kano Plains), coastal regions, and certain Rift Valley locations like the Nyakach and Muhoroni plains.

Urban centers such as Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa are also highly susceptible to flooding due to rapid urbanization, poor drainage, and development in low-lying or riparian areas.

Kenyans are encouraged to follow official weather updates regularly to stay informed.

The intensified rainfall is part of a broader weather pattern expected during the short rains season, which typically runs from October to December.
