Kenya Met issues heavy rain warning for multiple regions from Friday

Rainfall is expected to intensify in areas across the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and North-western Kenya
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory warning of moderate to heavy rains in several parts of the country this weekend, starting Friday, August 8.
The rainfall is expected to intensify in areas across the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and North-western Kenya.
In the Central Highlands, the affected counties include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi. The Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley regions will see rainfall in Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet.
Other counties forecast to experience similar conditions include Kericho, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
“Ongoing moderate (5–20mm) to heavy (>20mm) rains across the country. Scattered rainfall is being experienced and is expected to continue and intensify over several parts of the country,” Kenya Met stated.
The department has urged residents to remain alert and take precautions, especially in areas with poor drainage, dusty conditions, or strong winds.
Despite widespread rain in most regions, parts of the south-eastern lowlands are expected to remain cloudy and dry.
These include Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, as well as inland parts of Tana River County.
“Cold and cloudy conditions will persist intermittently over parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, South-eastern Lowlands, and the Rift Valley,” the advisory noted.
Kenya Met has also cautioned of a possible drop in temperatures in some areas, particularly in Central Kenya.
Counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi may see temperatures fluctuate between 10°C and 12°C.
In addition, the public has been advised to prepare for strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots in the Coast, South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern, and North-western regions.
