At least 151 people have died and thousands displaced following floods in Nigeria’s Niger State this week, officials have confirmed.

Ibrahim Audu Hussaini, the director of information at the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, said the updated death toll had risen from 117 reported on Friday.

Days after the incident, rescue teams were still digging through mud and debris in search of bodies.

Flooding is a common occurrence in Nigeria during the rainy season, which began in April.

In 2022, the country experienced its worst floods in over a decade, with more than 600 people killed, around 1.4 million displaced, and over 440,000 hectares of farmland destroyed.
