Governor Jama hails transformation of Garissa health sector
In Summary

Jama cited multi-million shilling investments that have turned local hospitals into centres of excellence.

Garissa Governor Nathif Jama has declared that the county’s health sector has undergone a transformation “nothing short of revolutionary.”

Jama cited multi-million shilling investments that have turned local hospitals into centres of excellence.

Speaking during his State of the County Address on Wednesday, Nathif said the Garissa Level 5 Referral Hospital now stands as a “symbol of hope and excellence,” following comprehensive upgrades and modernization.

Over the past three years, the hospital has been equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced renal care units offering complete dialysis services locally, as well as modern theatres capable of performing sophisticated surgeries previously only available in Nairobi.

These include laparoscopic surgeries, orthopaedic repairs, obstetric and gynaecological procedures, and specialised ENT and eye surgeries.

The governor highlighted the full refurbishment of the referral hospital, which included new wards, expanded diagnostic capacity, improved sanitation and enhanced patient comfort.

He added that staffing levels across all cadres had been increased, ensuring that doctors, nurses and specialists can serve residents effectively.

“We have ensured a steady, uninterrupted supply of both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical products. No longer do patients leave the facility in desperation. The hospital pharmacy is stocked, ready and reliable,” Governor Nathif told the assembly.

Beyond Garissa town, the governor said sub-county hospitals in Modogash, Balambala, Masalani, Bura, Dadaab and Hulugo have also been upgraded.

With new theatres, qualified personnel and steady medical supplies, these facilities are now able to perform life-saving surgeries closer to the people.

Governor Nathif emphasized that investment in healthcare remains one of his government’s most significant achievements.
