Kenyan runner Charles Kipkurui banned 5 years for doping

The AIU says Langat’s ban follows a test on his urine sample which returned a positive result for banned substances
Charles Kipkurui Langat, a 29-year-old Kenyan road runner, has been banned from the sport for five years for doping.
He had submitted an out-of-competition urine sample in Iten, Kenya and tested negative in July 2024; however, upon further analysis in October, the sample tested positive for furosemide.
Kipkurui was first given a two-year suspension.
In July 2025, again upon further analysis, the sample returned a positive result for testosterone and its metabolites androsterone, 5α-androstane-3α,17 diol (“5αAdiol”) and 5β-androstane.
Furosemide is a diuretic and a masking agent.
Langat has raced the half-marathon as fast as 58:53 during the Barcelona event in February 2023.
In January 2023, Langat ran the Valencia 10K in a time of 26:57, which represents his personal best.
Recently, several Kenyan athletes have tested positive for a diuretic and masking agent, including world marathon record holder Ruth Chepngetich, who was sanctioned in July 2025.
Track and field’s Athletics Integrity Unit said that Chepngetich tested positive for a banned diuretic and masking agent in March and “opted for a voluntary provisional suspension while the AIU’s investigation was ongoing.”
The Kenyan runner set the world record by almost two minutes at the Chicago Marathon last October in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 56 seconds. It was her third win in Chicago.
She also won the marathon at the 2019 world championships in Qatar, where the women’s race started at midnight to avoid extreme daytime heat.
The AIU gave no timetable for a disciplinary case for the 30-year-old runner.
