Safaricom's M-PESA, in Partnership with NBA Africa over the weekend held a comprehensive financial and digital literacy training with more than 500 juniors from the Nyanza region benefiting from the session.

The session held on Saturday, March 22, was organized by M-PESA Go during its National Basketball Association (NBA) tournament held at Kenyatta Sports Ground in Kisumu.

Speaking at the event, Esther Waititu, Safaricom PLC Chief Financial Services Officer said, “It is important to impart financial literacy to young people as early as 10 years as it equips them with skills which they will use in the future to manage their own finances."

"In today’s financial literacy session, I was impressed to see over 500 youth participating at the M-PESA Jr tournament in Kisumu.”

The youth who attended training and participated in the tournament came from Nyanza Region Sub counties.

“We have been in different competitions, but this one has been more extraordinary than the ones we have participated in. This session has not only provided the youth with a great sporting platform but also invaluable financial literacy knowledge through M-PESA Go," said coach Dickens Omondi Agwenge of St Peters Konim Junior Secondary School.

"Learning about savings and investment at such a young age is crucial in shaping a financially responsible future generation."

M-PESA Go is a financial product by Safaricom designed for teens and preteens aged 10 to 17 by allowing them to access M-PESA services at a younger age.

The product, however, restricts services such as cash withdrawals, access to digital loans, and payments related to betting or forex trading, thus, ensuring safety and responsible usage.
