Kenya Morans dominate day 1 of Africa Sevens Championships in Mauritius

Having already secured dominant wins earlier in the day, 36-0 against Côte d’Ivoire and 33-0 over Ghana, the Morans came into the East African derby aiming to finish the group stage on a high.
Kenya Morans capped off a flawless Pool A campaign at the 2025 Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens with a hard-fought 12-5 victory over fierce rivals Uganda, maintaining their unbeaten record at the Labourdonnais Sports Club in Port Louis, Mauritius.
Having already secured dominant wins earlier in the day, 36-0 against Côte d’Ivoire and 33-0 over Ghana, the Morans came into the East African derby aiming to finish the group stage on a high.
In the clash of the day, the Morans beat reigning champions Uganda in what was a closely fought derby.
The Morans, who had looked sharp in attack in their first two matches, were kept at bay by Uganda’s disciplined defensive structure.
At halftime, it was 0-0, a tough contest indeed.
The second half proved to be better tidings for Kenya as first Dennis Abukuse and then George Ooro scored in quick succession to give Kenya a 12-0 lead.
The Ugandans responded with an unconverted try as the game ended 12-5 to see Kenya score 81 points and concede only 5 on day one.
Day two will take place on Sunday with Kenya hopeful of carrying their form into the second day, as they seek to win the title of African Champions.
Last year, the Morans finished sixth after a mixed performance in the two-legged 2024 edition, also hosted at Labourdonnais Sports Club.
The tournament ran over two weekends, June 29–30 and July 6–7, and featured 12 teams, with Uganda emerging as overall winners under a series-based ranking system.
