Visiting Somali National League champions Mogadishu City Club has called on Kenyan authorities to apprehend individuals seen on camera trampling a Kenyan flag during the first leg first round CAF Champions League qualifier versus Kenya Police FC last weekend in Nairobi.
In an incident caught on camera and shared virally across several social media platforms, two young men, are seen stepping on and kicking a Kenyan flag, while another is seen to then pick the same flag and use it to rub himself in a derogatory manner, while holding a fan engagement during the match at the Nyayo National Stadium, 20 September 2025.
The video has been shared widely and has attracted the ire of many Kenyans and peace loving Somalis at large, who have urged the Kenyan government to take action on the two individuals.
Mogadishu City Club, who lost the first leg match 3-1, has also now joined the calls for action to be taken, saying in a statement Tuesday, that respect and tolerance are fundamental cornerstones of society.
"On behalf of Mogadishu City Club, we strongly condemn this act and extend our deepest apologies to the government and people of Kenya. Such behaviour has no place in football or in the spirit of friendship and sportsmanship that this competition represents,” the club said.
"We fully support any appropriate action by the Kenyan authorities against those involved. We also urge our fans – especially the younger generation (Gen-Z) – to always respect all nations, their flags and their people,” the statement read.
The two teams clash at the same venue this Sunday for the second leg of the continental competition, in what will be a home game for the Kenyan law enforcers. The first leg, a home game for the Somali outfit, was held at Nyayo for lack of a proper venue back in Somalia.
As it stands, Mogadishu City Club have to score three unanswered goals to progress to the next stage, where they might face either South Sudan's Jamus FC or Sudan mainland's Al Hilal Omdurman in the second round of qualifiers.
