Apple rolls out major iMessage upgrade with iOS 26

One of the standout features is the option to customise chat backgrounds.
Apple is rolling out a major update to its Messages app under iOS 26, introducing new features that will change how iPhone users communicate, and Kenyans have every reason to be excited.
One of the standout features is the option to customise chat backgrounds.
Users can now set personal backgrounds in conversations, and the change will also reflect on the other person’s screen, giving iMessage the same shared vibe found in Instagram chats. It’s a small update, but a fun way to show mood or connection.
Group chats are also getting a much-needed boost.
Apple has introduced a polls feature, allowing users to create quick opinion surveys to help with decisions like where to meet or what to contribute.
Even better, the phone can now suggest creating a poll when it senses a conversation heading in that direction, thanks to Apple Intelligence.
The update also focuses on better privacy. Messages from unknown contacts will now be screened into a separate folder, letting users choose whether to reply, ignore, or request more information — cutting down interruptions from unknown numbers.
Another major feature is Live Translation. The tool allows users to translate both text and audio chats instantly. This makes it easier for Kenyans to chat with people abroad or with those who speak different languages, without leaving the Messages app.
Additional updates include the ability to send and receive Apple Cash in group conversations and typing indicators in group chats. Users will now see when someone is typing, recording, or replying — just like in WhatsApp.
With iOS 26, Apple is making iMessage more personalised, private, and powerful — bringing fresh energy into daily chats.
