Political leaders in Isiolo County are urging residents to embrace peace and unity following a divisive attempt to remove Governor Abdi Hassan Guyo from office, which was halted by the Senate at the preliminary stage.
At a rally held on Thursday evening at Isiolo Town CBD, dubbed “Isiolo Pamoja,” Governor Guyo, County’s first Governor Godana Doyo, and County Women Representative Mumina Bonaya, among other leaders, called on the public to reject divisive politics and resist attempts to split the community along ethnic lines for political gain.
Governor Guyo emphasized that he holds no grudges against anyone involved in the failed impeachment attempt. He appealed to fellow leaders to work together to ensure quality service delivery for Isiolo residents during the remainder of his tenure.
The political dynamics in the County Assembly have shifted significantly, with 12 of the 16 MCAs who initially voted for impeachment now defecting and supporting the Governor.
This leaves the opposition with only six MCAs and is likely to resolve the ongoing County Assembly impasse, including the question of who will remain as the legitimate speaker.
Currently, Abdullahi Banticha has the backing of 12 MCAs, while Mohamed Roba retains support from six. The County Assembly consists of 18 MCAs. Notably, during the impeachment bid, only two MCAs supported Governor Guyo.
Speaking at the rally, Guyo explained that he had initially avoided holding a public rally to prevent further political polarization.
“I refrained from rallies after the impeachment attempt, following the advice of Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, to focus on mending relations with MCAs and other leaders,” he said.
County Women Representative Mumina Bonaya echoed the Governor’s call for unity, highlighting that the people of Isiolo have already lost more than two months to unnecessary political wrangles.
She urged everyone to focus on work and wait for the 2027 general elections to seek their mandate.
Former Governor Godana Doyo also declared his support for Guyo, noting that both the first and second governors are backing the current Governor to strengthen service delivery in the county.
The leaders further expressed support for President William Ruto, praising his contributions to Isiolo and the wider Northern Kenya region.
