Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has declared Friday, June 6 as a public holiday to mark Eid-Ul-Adha.

Murkomen noted the announcement in a gazette notice released on Tuesday, June 4, 2025.

“IT IS notified for the general information of the public that in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Friday, 6th June, 2025, shall be a public holiday to mark Eid-ul-Adha,” reads the notice.

The festival is the commemoration of the Quranic tale of Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to God.

Muslims believe that before he could carry out the sacrifice, God provided a ram in Ismail's stead.

In the Christian and Jewish telling, Ibrahim is ordered to kill another son, Isaac.

During the festivals, Islams remember the sacrifice made by Abraham by slaughtering animals and helping the poor and needy.

The holiday is also known as the Feast of the Sacrifice and falls at the end of the annual Islamic pilgrimage of Hajj, where thousands flock to Saudi Arabia yearly to visit Mecca—Islam’s holiest site.)

Chief Kadhi Abdulhalim Hussein announced that Eid-ul-Adha will be celebrated in Kenya on Friday, June 6, following the sighting of the crescent moon in Mecca.

The Chief Kadhi stated that May 28, 2025, marks the start of Dhul Hijjah, with Eid-ul-Adha set to be observed on June 6.

Dhul Hijjah is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and aligns with Kenya’s observance with Saudi Arabia.

Hussein underscored the importance of solidarity among Muslims as they prepare to celebrate the occasion.

Across Kenya and the world, Muslims will observe the day with prayer, reflection, festive meals, and acts of generosity.
