Six people have died and two others remain missing after a boat overturned on Lake Tahoe, a popular tourist destination straddling the California-Nevada border.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon as strong winds swept across the lake, creating waves up to 8 feet high. Authorities say the 27-foot-long gold Chris-Craft boat was caught in rough waters during gusts of up to 35 miles per hour.

According to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, emergency teams responded to a distress call at around 3 pm local time. Ten people had fallen into the cold water, and two survivors were rescued and taken to hospital with hypothermia and other injuries.

As of Sunday, the sheriff’s Dive Team and Search and Rescue units continued combing the area near DL Bliss State Park, close to where the tragedy took place. The names of the victims have not yet been released.

Local media, including the Reno Gazette-Journal, reported freezing temperatures across the region on Saturday, with snowfall recorded in the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains. The San Francisco Chronicle added that the accident happened near Rooster Rock, a part of the lake with steep underwater cliffs dropping more than 300 feet.

Videos shared online showed large waves slamming boats into docks. Authorities have also raised concerns about potential contamination caused by vessel damage during the storm.

Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America, has an average depth of around 1,000 feet, according to researchers at the University of California, Davis.
