Emergency services shared images of destroyed buildings still burning, and residents being led away from the rubble.

At least seven people have been killed and more than 20 others injured in a Russian missile and drone attack that hit residential areas, hospitals and sports facilities in the Kyiv region overnight, according to Ukraine’s interior minister Ihor Klymenko.

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said six of the victims were in a high-rise building in the capital. He added that 22 others had been injured, and many residents were forced into shelters as drones flew overhead and explosions rocked the city.

The Ukrainian air force said 352 drones and 16 missiles targeted the country, mostly in the Kyiv area.

The attack, which came in the early hours of Monday morning, was part of an intensified Russian campaign designed to overwhelm Ukrainian air defences.

Emergency services shared images of destroyed buildings still burning, and residents being led away from the rubble. One person was reported dead in Bila Tserkva, south of Kyiv, after a drone hit a hospital.

Ukrainian commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky said the country would respond with force. "We will not just sit in defence because this brings nothing and eventually leads to the fact that we still retreat, lose people and territories," he said.

The latest assault came less than a week after another deadly attack on Kyiv that left 28 people dead and more than 100 injured. That strike was among the deadliest since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled. The last direct talks between Ukraine and Russia ended nearly three weeks ago, with agreement only on the exchange of prisoners and the bodies of the dead.

President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected in London on Monday for talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer on UK military support.

He is also scheduled to attend a NATO summit dinner in The Netherlands on Tuesday. A planned meeting with US President Donald Trump during the recent G7 summit was cancelled after Trump left early due to the worsening crisis in the Middle East.
