Joint funeral set for Kisumu crash victims, says Governor Nyong’o

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has announced that the county, together with the national government, will hold a joint funeral service for victims of the recent Kisumu Coptic roundabout tragedy.
In a statement posted on X on Monday, August 11, 2025, Nyong’o said the ceremony will take place on Saturday, August 16, at Nakki Primary School in Nyakach Sub- County. He noted that preparations are underway, led by his deputy, Dr. Ochieng Owili, and Engineer Vincent Kodera.
“Our thoughts remain with the bereaved families, and we continue to wish a quick recovery to those still in hospital,” Nyong’o said.
The fatal accident happened last week along the Kisumu–Kakamega road when a school bus belonging to AIC Naki High School lost control near the Coptic roundabout, crossed into the opposite lane, and plunged into a ditch. The bus was carrying mourners returning from a funeral in Nyahera.
Twenty-six passengers died at the scene, while 28 others sustained serious injuries and were taken to various hospitals in Kisumu County.
Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga earlier announced that the government will cover all medical bills and burial expenses for the victims. He added that pathologists from Nyanza and Western Kenya have been mobilized to conduct postmortems once families give consent.
Dr. Oluga stressed that the national and county governments are working closely to ensure the victims are laid to rest with dignity.
Preparations for the mass funeral are ongoing, with both levels of government assuring affected families of full support during this difficult time.
