The Electronic Visa and Travel Authorization System (E-Visa/ETAS) will officially take effect on September 1, 2025, according to the Somali Immigration and Citizenship Agency.

Somalia has launched a new electronic visa system in a bid to modernize its immigration services, ease travel and tighten national security.

The Electronic Visa and Travel Authorization System (E-Visa/ETAS) will officially take effect on September 1, 2025, according to the Somali Immigration and Citizenship Agency.

The new system will require all travelers entering Somalia to apply online for an e-Visa through a dedicated portal.

Authorities say the platform will simplify the application process, reduce waiting times and bring more efficiency to approvals. Applicants will be able to submit their requests from anywhere in the world.

Isxaaq Hassan Taakow, Director of the Department of Foreigners and Entry Permits, said the system is built with strong checks and balances to ensure it operates effectively.

“This is a modern solution built to serve travelers while protecting national interests,” he noted, adding that a specialized team has already been trained to run the platform securely.

Director General Mustafa Sheikh Ali Dhuxulow described the project as a milestone in Somalia’s digital transformation.

“It demonstrates Somalia’s commitment to integration with global systems. It also supports economic growth and safeguards sensitive data,” he said.

The government clarified that some groups will remain exempt from the new requirement, including holders of multiple-entry visas, diplomatic and UNLP passports, residents with valid permits, and citizens of countries that have visa-free agreements with Somalia.

Internal Security Minister Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag stressed that the system will also promote accountability in revenue collection. “All visa fees will go directly to government accounts, helping to strengthen our financial institutions,” he explained.

The e-Visa rollout is part of wider reforms aimed at positioning Somalia as a competitive regional hub for trade, tourism and investment.

The initiative comes months after Somalia was admitted into the East African Community, a regional bloc that allows free movement of goods and people among its members.

Officials say the move is also a demonstration of the country’s resilience and determination despite ongoing security threats from Al-Shabaab.
