The reopening of the Egyptian Embassy in Mogadishu marks a major step in strengthening the historic ties between the two nations.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has announced that Egypt will reopen its embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia.

The announcement came during a joint press conference with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud following bilateral talks held at the Al-Alamein Presidential Palace on Monday.

The reopening of the Egyptian Embassy in Mogadishu marks a major step in strengthening the historic ties between the two nations.

It underscores Cairo’s renewed commitment to enhancing cooperation with Somalia in key sectors such as security, education, health, and diplomacy.

During their meeting, both leaders reaffirmed the importance of bolstering strategic relations to promote stability and mutual development in the Horn of Africa and the wider region.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed deep appreciation for Egypt’s continued support and longstanding solidarity with the Somali people.

“We are grateful for Egypt’s unwavering friendship and the role it continues to play in Somalia’s peacebuilding and development efforts,” President Mohamud said.

He added that he is confident the renewed engagement will usher in a new era of robust cooperation and shared progress.

President El-Sisi emphasized his readiness to support Somalia’s aspirations for security, growth, and integration into regional and global frameworks.

He noted that the reopening of the embassy is both a symbolic and practical move that will help revive diplomatic, cultural, and economic cooperation between the two countries.

“We agreed to continue intensifying cooperation to ensure the stability of this vital region, given its direct impact on regional and international stability and security,” he said.

The two leaders also discussed Egypt's potential military and police participation in the new African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which aims to support national efforts to establish security.

“We agreed on the importance of coordination with international partners, as the international community assumes its responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security, to ensure adequate, sustainable, and predictable funding for this mission, enabling it to effectively implement its mandate,” President El-Sisi added.

The leaders also explored ways to strengthen bilateral relations in light of the Joint Political Declaration signed in January, which aims to elevate ties to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership.

“We agreed on the importance of building on the current momentum and taking concrete steps to deepen cooperation in specific areas of mutual interest particularly in the political, economic, security, and military fields while emphasizing continued consultation and coordination on various relevant issues,” said President El-Sisi.

Egypt had closed its embassy in Mogadishu amid heightened insecurity in the early 1990s, following the collapse of the Somali central government.

The improved security and diplomatic landscape in Mogadishu has since opened avenues for renewed engagement by regional and international partners.

President El-Sisi commended President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s efforts to foster national unity and build strong institutions, as well as his commitment to combating terrorism and preserving state sovereignty

He reaffirmed Egypt's full support for all initiatives aimed at achieving national consensus on Somalia’s political future in a way that enhances security and lays the groundwork for sustainable development.

Mohamed Ibrahim Adan, a legislator from Somalia’s South West State, said the announcement has been widely welcomed and will give a major boost to Somalia’s foreign relations.

He said it signals growing confidence in the country’s recovery and international standing.

Presidents Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Abdel Fattah El-Sisi also called for greater African cooperation and solidarity in addressing shared challenges, including regional instability, climate change, and economic resilience.
