Iran executes man convicted of fatal 2022 protest attack
In Summary

Saturday’s execution brings to at least ten the number of people hanged in connection with the protests that followed Amini’s death.

Iran executed a man on Saturday after he was convicted of attacking security forces during nationwide protests that erupted in 2022, the country’s judiciary announced.

Mehran Bahramian was found to have been among a group that opened fire on a vehicle carrying security personnel in Semirom, in the central province of Isfahan, killing officer Mohsen Rezaei and injuring others, according to the judiciary’s Mizan Online news website.

The attack occurred on December 31, 2022, amid a wave of demonstrations sparked by the death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, an Iranian Kurd detained over an alleged violation of the country’s strict dress code for women.

Her death led to nationwide protests under the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom.”

Bahramian’s death sentence, originally handed down by the Revolutionary Court of Isfahan, was upheld by the Supreme Court and carried out early Saturday morning, Mizan reported.

Rights groups note that his brother, Fazel Bahramian, was also sentenced to death on the same charges, while another brother, Morad Bahramian, was killed by security forces during the 2022 protests.

Amnesty International and other rights organisations have raised concerns over the use of confessions extracted under duress, including beatings, prolonged solitary confinement, and threats against detainees and their families, which are routinely accepted as evidence in Iranian courts.

Saturday’s execution brings to at least ten the number of people hanged in connection with the protests that followed Amini’s death.
