The shift aims to enhance democratic governance and inclusivity in Somalia's electoral processes.

Somalia is set to embark on a historic journey towards democratic governance as it gears up for its first one-person-one-vote elections in more than five decades.

The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) confirmed that voter registration will commence nationwide on April 15, 2025, ahead of the scheduled elections starting June 30.

Chairman Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan of NIEBC announced the readiness of the electoral body during the official unveiling of electoral equipment in Mogadishu.

"The public will begin heading to voter registration centres on the 15th of this month," Abdikarim stated, highlighting the initial focus on the Banadir region, which includes the capital, Mogadishu.

The registration process will initiate in Shangaani district before expanding to Shibis, Hamarweyne, and other districts within Banadir, followed by a comprehensive rollout across all regions of Somalia.

"We have completed all logistical preparations, including the provision of election materials and the designation of polling stations countrywide," Abdikarim confirmed.

This voter registration marks a crucial milestone in Somalia's political landscape, reflecting a commitment to transition towards a universal suffrage model despite facing resistance from some political quarters.

The shift aims to enhance democratic governance and inclusivity in Somalia's electoral processes.

During the equipment unveiling ceremony, Abdikarim emphasized the commission's dedication to transparency.

"Today, we are presenting the equipment to the Somali people and the international community for scrutiny," he declared, underscoring the importance of impartial oversight.

The event was attended by Banadir Governor and Mogadishu Mayor Mohamed Ahmed Amiir, who pledged full support for the registration drive.

"I will lead the people of Banadir region to register and participate in the upcoming elections," Mayor Amiir affirmed, highlighting local leadership's commitment to ensuring broad civic engagement.

As Somalia prepares for the June elections, NIEBC continues to prioritize inclusivity and transparency, aiming to conduct free and fair polls that reflect the aspirations of its citizens.
