Florida State Representative Joe Casello has died at the age of 73 after suffering a heart attack, according to an announcement by Florida House Democrats. Casello passed away surrounded by his family and longtime partner.
“We are heartbroken to share that Representative Joe Casello has passed away, with his family and girlfriend by his side, following a heart attack,” read a post on the Florida House Democrats’ official X account.
“The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.”
Casello’s public service career spanned decades, beginning as a firefighter in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he served for 30 years before transitioning to politics in Florida.
He held a seat as a Boynton Beach city commissioner before being elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2018. He had recently declared his intention to run for a seat on the Palm Beach County Commission in 2026.
Described by colleagues as compassionate and grounded, Casello was also known for his humor and sharp sense of style.
“Joe was a wonderful person always kind, supportive, and positive,” Rep. Christine Hunschofsky wrote in a tribute on X. “He had a wicked sense of humor and was among the best dressed in Tallahassee. I called him ‘GQ Joe.’ I will miss his friendship deeply.”
According to his official House biography, Casello enjoyed golf and brought humility and purpose to his work in the legislature.
A private family ceremony is planned in Massachusetts, with a public memorial service to be announced soon. Under Florida law, Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to call a special election to fill the vacant seat.
