Joho urged officials tasked with protecting Lake Victoria to seek alternative ways to enforce maritime rules.

Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has called on law enforcement officers to stop arresting fishermen arbitrarily over alleged violations of marine laws.

Speaking at the Blue Economy conference in Homa Bay on Wednesday, Joho urged officials tasked with protecting Lake Victoria to seek alternative ways to enforce maritime rules.

He emphasized that arresting fishermen should not be the default response and highlighted that many disputes could be resolved by involving the ministry directly.

"Instead of regularly arresting them (the fishermen) for using illegal nets, come to my office to get recommended nets for them," Joho said.

This approach, he noted, aligns with the government’s commitment to support fishermen through financial aid, improved safety measures, and promotion of sustainable fishing practices.

"The government is actively working to provide necessary support to the fishing sector. We want our fishermen to operate in a safe environment while undertaking their normal activities," the Cabinet Secretary added.

In a major announcement, Joho revealed that the government will allocate Sh300 million to purchase rescue boats aimed at enhancing safety and rescue operations on the lake.

The conference, held under the theme "Our Water Our Wealth," seeks to unlock the blue economy’s potential in the lake region, which remains vital for local livelihoods.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga highlighted the importance of agriculture as the county’s main economic activity and called for faster solutions to challenges facing farmers.

"To solve some of these challenges, our agricultural officials must be in touch with the farmers," she said.

Her deputy, Oyugi Magwanga, urged for increased support to improve fishermen’s safety while working on the lake.

The conference also recognized several fishermen who have adopted proper fishing methods, rewarding their efforts to conserve the lake’s environment.

This event serves as a prelude to the 62nd Madaraka Day National celebrations, which will take place in Homa Bay County on June 1, 2025.

Joho promised further in-depth discussions on Blue Economy and maritime affairs during the upcoming celebrations.
