Contractors get relief as Nairobi slashes approval delays

Contractors and developers in Nairobi can now expect faster approval of their building plans after Governor Johnson Sakaja reduced the waiting period from six months to two weeks.
The adjustment is meant to address long-standing delays that have increased costs and slowed down construction projects.
The previous process was hindered by excessive paperwork and inefficiencies, forcing developers to put projects on hold for months.
Some turned to unofficial shortcuts, leading to poor-quality buildings that did not meet safety standards.
Speaking during a meeting with the Kenya Property Developers Association (KPDA) at City Hall on Wednesday, Sakaja announced that all building development applications must now be processed within 14 days.
"By reducing the approval timeline to be done after every two weeks, property developers can expect a more timely and predictable process, allowing them to plan and execute their projects more effectively," Sakaja said.
The governor noted that this change is intended to streamline the approval system while ensuring compliance with construction regulations.
Nairobi has experienced multiple building collapses due to poor enforcement of safety guidelines, resulting in loss of lives and property.
Sakaja emphasized that setting a clear timeline for approvals will not only benefit developers but also improve accountability in the sector.
The county government is determined to eliminate unnecessary barriers while maintaining strict oversight to prevent substandard construction.
With this new approach, Nairobi’s urban development sector is expected to become more efficient, attracting more investment and reducing project costs.
