In Summary

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a five-day forecast warning of scattered rains, cold nights, and punishing daytime heat.

Kenya is staring at a stretch of wild weather with umbrellas out in the west, heavy jackets in the highlands, and fans on full blast at the coast.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a five-day ( May 16 to May 30) forecast warning of scattered rains, cold nights, and punishing daytime heat across different parts of the country.

From Nairobi to Mombasa and deep into the Rift Valley, the weather outlook is a mixed bag that will leave no region untouched, with rain-soaked roads in some counties and blazing sunshine in others.

Moderate afternoon rains are expected in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, covering Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

According to the department, the rainfall in these areas will mainly fall in the afternoon after cloudy mornings.

In the South Eastern lowlands, light rains are forecast for Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita-Taveta and the inland parts of Tana River County.

Heavier downpours are expected in parts of the Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin, including Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia and Uasin Gishu.

Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, and Narok will also experience similar rainfall patterns.

Meanwhile, residents in the Highlands East and Central Rift Valley should prepare for freezing nights with temperatures expected to drop below 10°C.

Counties affected include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, and Narok.

At the coast and in the north-east, it's a different story altogether — daytime temperatures will rise above 32°C.

Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo are among the counties expected to feel the heat.

As the country braces for split skies and contrasting conditions, Kenya Met urges the public to stay informed and prepared for changing weather through the week.
