In Summary

In a detailed statement released on Monday, July 28, 2025, the Met department noted that the dominant feature behind the persistent chill has been extensive cloud cover.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has shed light on the unusually cold and cloudy weather experienced in many parts of the country throughout July, attributing the conditions to a mix of seasonal atmospheric patterns and geographical influences.

In a detailed statement released on Monday, July 28, 2025, the department noted that the dominant feature behind the persistent chill has been extensive cloud cover particularly stratified clouds which have largely shielded the central highlands, parts of the Rift Valley, and southeastern regions from sunlight.

This has significantly reduced surface heating during the day, leading to lower temperatures.

“High-pressure systems have contributed to increased atmospheric stability, encouraging the formation of thick cloud layers that trap cold air near the surface and prevent daytime warming,” the statement read in part.

Altitude was also cited as a key factor, with areas such as Nairobi and surrounding highlands sitting at elevations above 1,500 meters, which naturally experience cooler temperatures.

Additionally, the department linked the cold conditions to broader regional patterns influenced by the Southern Hemisphere's winter. During this season, cold and dry air masses from the south often extend northward, affecting the climate in central and southern Kenya.

The statement comes shortly after the department issued a five-day forecast predicting continued cold and cloudy conditions across several regions.

In its weekly weather advisory published on Friday, July 25, Kenya Met projected very low temperatures ranging between 10°C and 12°C in the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the southeastern lowlands, and parts of the Rift Valley.

Counties expected to be affected include Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi in the highlands east of the Rift, as well as Trans Nzoia, Nakuru, Kericho, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Narok, Kisii, Nyamira, and Migori in the Rift Valley region.

The cold spell is also projected to affect parts of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland areas of Tana River County.

Meanwhile, the northeastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are expected to remain relatively warm. The coastal strip including Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, and Lamu is forecast to experience mild temperatures, ranging between 20°C and 21°C over the coming days.

Despite the seasonal nature of the chill, the Met Department advises residents to stay warm and take precautionary measures as the cold weather persists across much of the country.
