Normal beach activities resume as Mombasa County lifts restrictions

Governor Nassir said the latest review shows a drop in wind speeds to a maximum of 16 knots.
Normal beach activities and construction work have resumed in Mombasa after Governor Abdulswamad Sherrif Nassir lifted earlier restrictions that were put in place due to dangerous coastal weather conditions.
The move follows an updated advisory from the County Director of Meteorological Services indicating improved weather, with reduced wind speeds and declining wave heights along the coastline.
"In view of the improved weather conditions, I hereby lift the earlier restrictions," the governor said on Tuesday.
The restrictions were introduced after a warning from the Kenya Meteorological Department on strong winds and high waves that posed a risk to public safety.
In response, the county government temporarily closed public beaches, suspended marine activities, and halted construction works across Mombasa.
Governor Nassir said the latest review shows a drop in wind speeds to a maximum of 16 knots and a steady reduction in wave activity, based on revised weather models and direct observation.
As a result, normal beach activities can now resume.
"Public beaches are now open for public access and recreational use. Construction activities may resume across Mombasa County effective immediately," Nassir added.
However, caution is advised for deep-sea marine operators as moderate swells may still be experienced offshore.
The County boss thanked residents, stakeholders, and visitors for their cooperation during the period of heightened alert.
"Your commitment to safety enabled a coordinated and effective response," Nassir said.
The county government has assured the public that it will continue to monitor the situation in partnership with the Meteorological Department and its disaster preparedness team to ensure public safety remains a top priority.
